Founded by farmers in Yorkshire in 1949 ASDA Limited was originally called Associated Dairies & Farm Stores
Limited, with the first store opening in Leeds. In 1965 the company merged with Asquith a chain of three
supermarkets.
The name Asda came to be in 1965 when Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Limited merged with
Asquith, the directors using the first two letters from Asquith and Dairies named the new merged supermarket
business “ASDA”
In the early 1990’s the company went through a few stiff patches but went through major changes under the new
leadership of Archie Norman who later went onto become Conservative MP.
They are rated as the second largest retailer in the UK offering a diverse range of benefits to their employees

quickly assured staff that they would not be reducing staff but increasing the number of staff at Asda with more
stores opening, currently over 100 Asda

Asda was purchased by Wal-Mart in 1999 for £6.7 Billion after showing interest in entering the UK market, at this
time Asda under the leadership of Leighton were looking at merging with Kingfisher PLC.
In 2009 ASDA was again sold this time to a Leeds based investment company called Corinth Services Limited, this
company was also owned by Wal-Mart so even though Asda was sold it was still operated by Wal-Mart, the company was
sold to the investment company for £6.9 Billion.
In May 2010 Asda purchased all of Netto’s UK based stores for around £778 Million, allowing Asda to compete with
the likes of Tesco, Sainsburys and
Morrisons at a more local level as the majority of the stores operated by Netto were much smaller than the stores
ASDA operated.
With this deal Asda purchased 194 Netto stores out of which 47 were sold on to other competing supermarket chains
and other businesses due to the intervention from Office of Fair Trading.
The remaining stores will be rebranded to Asda in the begging of 2011 and is currently ongoing.

Working on a shift will manage their team and be the first escalation point to be used by shop floor assistants and
other front and back room staff.
