The History & Founders of
M&S:
Founded by Michael Marks the
company now employee more than 70,000 people worldwide. Michael Marks ran stalls from 1884 up and down the United
Kingdom with his first stall opening in Leeds and in 1893 Michael opened his first shop on Cheetham Hill Road,
Manchester.
By 1894 the company now had 12
stores and Michael was now looking for a partner to take the business further and realise his expansion plan. He
approached his old friend Isaac Dewhirst who in the begging lent Michael the money to start up his stall. But Isaac
declined the offer but recommended one of his cashiers – Tom Spencer, Tom agreed and on the 28th
September 1884 Marks and Spencer was established.
Tom Spencer invested £300 into
the new business and brought with him his experience in accounts and administration as well as business contacts
and with Michaels eye for products that will sell as well as good sales techniques this was quickly going to turn
into a great thriving business partnership.
And it did the new stores were
called “Penny Bazaars” and had slogans as “Admission Free” so to entice customers to come in and it worked and by
the early 1900 the company had expanded to 36 penny bazaars and 12 high street stores.
Early 1990’s saw the company
acquire a number of their competitors and get listed as a Public company. Both Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer
past away and a legal battle ensued for control of the business eventually Michael Marks son Simon Marks regaining
control of the business.
The company in 1901 built a
dedicated warehouse on Derby street in Manchester which became the companies first registered address and was ready
for the massive growth that would come in the next decade with 145 stores operating under the Marks and Spencer
name by 1915.
Between the 1920’s and 1940’s saw
Britain plunge into wars that brought hardship on the population and the British economy suffered with many
businesses going bust and unemployment reaching record level of around 3 million but Marks and Spencers remained
strong focusing on selling food and entered a new area of business buy selling clothes.
